About John

I'm a 29 year old, seven year Army veteran, with a degree in Political Science and History from the University of California at Santa Barbara.  I served three tours in Iraq: 2003, 2004-2005, and 2008-2009.  In 2010 I hiked the first 1727 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, covering all of California.

I have been extremely disappointed with myself for not finishing my first hike and have been thinking about not just returning, but starting all over again from the start.  The experience is a truly unique opportunity to give meaning to one's life, meet some of the nicest people in the world, and see some of the most beautiful places in California, Oregon, and Washington that too few people can experience in a single life time.

The first time I hiked this trail, I hiked it for myself.  I wanted to clear my mind and try to make my peace with the world.  When people asked me what they could do to help, I offered to let them send me food along the way.  This second hike is something I am still doing for myself because quite frankly it's such an addictive activity! Although, I also hope that this second time around, I can also attract greater attention to veterans' causes and channel some of the goodwill and support people extended to me to help others who are in far greater need than myself.

2013 update: I'm currently residing in Spokane, WA and working for the Inland Northwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America as the council's STEM Director.  I am planning on hiking the 93-mile Wonderland Trail this summer.  The Wonderland Trail traverses around Mt. Rainier's base and has approximately 20,000ft+ in elevation gain throughout its 93 miles.
